Tips For Handling Your Hemorrhoid Problems

By Dr. Trella Dutton

Hemorrhoids are one of those things most people have experienced but no one wants to talk about. They have been the subject of too many jokes on late night talk shows. Well, you don't have to talk about them, but you shouldn't ignore them. Here are some tips to help you deal effectively with hemorrhoids. --Then you can forget about them.

Ice will be your best friend. Apply an ice pack whenever you can. In order to prevent irritation and inflammation ice is always a good call plus it can reduce pain and swelling. Although the ice will feel good be sure not to over do it and cause yourself frostbite. The surrounding rectal and hemorrhoidal tissues are still susceptible to frostbite. Ice is generally recommended up to four times per day.

A warm bath can also prove to be comforting for hemorrhoid sufferers. A warm bath will help to decrease pain and swelling of hemorrhoid tissues. Make sure the water is not too hot or else it will exacerbate your problem and further irritate and inflame rectal tissues. Try to have three warm baths per day.

Change your diet to include less salt. If you eat foods that are high in salt, it can make many different parts of your body swell, including your hemorrhoids. Reducing your salt intake can improve and prevent hemorrhoids, as well as lower your blood pressure. Not only will it be easier to use the restroom, but you will feel healthier overall.

As was stated earlier, ice will help a great deal. Apply ice to affected area for about 10-15 minutes and the area will feel numb and the swelling will go down.

Prevention is always the best medicine. To reduce your chances of even getting hemorrhoids in the first place always maintain a healthy and steady weight. Excessive weight places pressure on the pelvic region and the pelvic bones thus increasing your chances of getting hemorrhoids. Get plenty of exercise and eat a balanced diet that contains about 40 grams of fiber.

A contributing factor to getting hemorrhoids is straining when using the bathroom. In this case a stool softener may be indicated. A stool softener's purpose is just as it indicates, to soften the stool therefore making stool easier to pass, thus preventing hemorrhoids.

Use Aloe Vera juice to soothe hemorrhoids. You can use a cotton swab soaked in the juice to apply it directly to the skin. Aloe Vera juice can relieve itching and pain. If you let the area continue to itch, you may cause more damage by scratching the affected area.

Remember to avoid scratching your hemorrhoids. Scratching may give you temporary relief but in the long run could make the irritation and discomfort markedly worse.

Sitting on the toilet for extended periods of time, even if you're not using the bathroom, is not good for your hemorrhoids. Exposing your buttocks to this type of direct pressure while your rectum is in this position will usually cause significant strain on your rectal veins and ultimately increase swelling and pain of the hemorrhoids.

Never lift heavy objects. Lifting something heavy pressure on your rectum just like straining to defecate. If you already have hemorrhoids, you may be further irritating them by lifting and carrying heavy objects. Always make sure you are using correct lifting methods, or pair up with someone when you know something may be too heavy for you to lift by yourself.

If you suffer from hemorrhoids, it is really important to eat a high-fiber diet. Eating lots of fruits can help to soften your stools. Some of the best fruits for this are watermelon, grapes, and papaya. Also, eat plenty of vegetables that are high in fiber, such as cabbage and okra.

I hope these tips have helped you deal with the uncomfortable subject of hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids are a small problem that when left alone can get much worse. It is best to really become informed, so you are able to treat them effectively before they have a chance to get worse.

Don't ignore your hemorrhoids. Ignoring them may not only lead to unnecessary suffering but could become worse and require expensive surgical intervention.

Always remember to consult with your health care provider for proper diagnosis and approved treatment before beginning any treatment on your own.
