Sleep Apnea Solution Offered By New Haven Dentist

By Cody Rine

New Haven sleep apnea sufferers can seek solutions from their local dentist. Most often sufferers will have a loud snore, and stop breathing several times a night. This interruption of the rest cycle prevents them from feeling fully rested the next day, and over time it can result in a variety of illnesses.

Most patients utilize a CPAP mask to treat their snoring. This works great for many people. However, there are also many individuals who simply cannot tolerate having something on their face during the night, and these people need to seek alternative options.

The mouth guard which brings the lower jaw forward is called a mandibular repositioning device, and this works for some people. A tongue depressor worn in the mouth, bringing the tongue forward, might also be a good option. Either of these devices can clear the obstruction, and allow air to flow better.

These dental devices do have some side effects, however. If they are not fitted properly and regularly, they can result in soreness of the mouth. Saliva tends to build up during the night, and over time they can even reshape the teeth, mouth, and jaw.

There are some surgical procedures which can fix the snoring problem for good. Some surgeons will remove the tonsils or the adenoids in order to clear the obstruction. When that does not work, they can remove tissues in their throat or nose, allowing for an unobstructed airway.

As with anywhere else, New Haven sleep apnea patients are seeking a solution to their problem before it develops into heart disease. These periods where they stop sleeping can also result in tired driving, resulting in more car accidents. Loud snoring should never be regarded as a normal part of life.
