Exercise While You Work

By Dave Lee

People who spend most of their time working in front of a computer or piles of paperwork develop a sedentary way of life because of their lack of movement. If they don't exercise outside of work then this will result in weight gain and problems in their health.

Although it might sound like a good idea to quit your job and find a new career that will enable you to move around all day long, there are other appropriate and realistic steps to improve your situation and create a healthier environment at the comfort of your desk.

Get Rid of Your Comfy Chair

In order to achieve a workplace environment that will allow you to exercise is by purchasing an exercise ball to use rather than a desk chair. The use of Swiss balls have started to become a fad in many offices not only for its healthy benefits, but simply because it's fun to sit all day on a bouncy ball.

This ball however, is not an ordinary ball because of its many benefits for your posture as well as your blood circulation. Sitting on an exercise ball requires you to move in order to keep your balance which in return causes you to work on your core (abdominal) muscles; strengthening them and in the long run could possibly give you the abs you've always dreamed about.

Benefit from Walking

Starting your day right with some kind of physical activity such as walking can perk up your energy as well as burn a few calories. Finding a way to do more walking; on your way to work, during business hours while you're going up and down the stairs trying to deliver documents, and or after work while you're walking downstairs and to the parking lot. Incorporating more cardio into your workday can really help improve your fitness as well as your mind.

Get Up and Stretch

As much as you can, try to do the office errands by yourself instead of always asking an assistant to do them for you. Taking the time to walk to the photocopy room can allow you to perform stretching exercises such as raising your arms and reach as high as you can or maybe when no one else is looking, try to extend your arms all the way to the floor to stretch out your hamstrings. Stretching may be a low form of physical exercise, but it can better your blood circulation and improve flexibility and relieves you from stress.

Squeeze Those Muscles

Whether you are sitting on your chair or balancing an exercise ball, it is still possible to give your body a workout by contracting your abdominal and butt muscles. This method is performed by sucking in or tightening your muscles and then holding it for a few seconds and then releasing as you exhale. Repeat this procedure for as long as you can and you will start to feel that burning sensation.

As can be seen, including exercise into your busy schedule at work should become a habit so as to better your fitness and keep you from gaining weight. These routines are a simple way to improve your work environment for your benefit, but you need to make an effort and take the time to give importance to your health and wellness.
